🌿 Meditation Malas – A Guide to Meaning & Practice

🧘 What is a Meditation Mala?

A meditation mala—also called a japa mala—is a string of 108 beads used for:

  • Mantra repetition (japa)

  • Breathwork and focus

  • Spiritual practices in Hinduism, Buddhism, and yoga traditions

The mala typically includes:

  • 108 beads

  • 1 larger “guru bead” (also called sumeru) that marks the start/end of the cycle

🔄 How to Use a Mala

  1. Hold the mala in your dominant hand, draped over your middle or ring finger

  2. Begin with the bead next to the guru bead (do not count the guru bead)

  3. Recite your mantra or focus on your breath with each bead

  4. Move to the next bead using your thumb

  5. Complete a full round of 108 repetitions

  6. To continue, reverse direction—never cross over the guru bead
